The students of San Academy - Velachery had a ‘noble’ opportunity to visit “Athmalaya” - a Home for the old and elderly.
The objective of this visit was to sensitize students to the difficulties and problems of homeless, aged people and to become aware of the joy of serving and being with the elderly. Another main objective was to provide them companionship and emotional support.
The visit was a life turning experience as it was filled with emotions and sentiments. The Old Age Home houses many elderly residents who are all above 50 years of age. Both men and women are cared for in this Home.
The otherwise morbid atmosphere was enlivened by our presence. On behalf of the School, students donated groceries, clothes and other basic supplies. The empathetic San students stopped by almost every bed to enquire about the resident and strike a conversation. It was surprising that all of them had stories about his/her childhood, school days, and even politics and generation gap to talk about.
A short entertainment programme of dance and devotional songs brought smiles to their faces. They enjoyed the company of the kids very much. It turned out to be a new experience for the students as well as for the inmates.
Children learnt the basic principles of humanity and the unconditional love and respect for elders in ones family and society.

San Academy, a pioneer in the field of imparting quality education aims to not only enhance fine cognitive abilities in children, but also strives to shape their persona from this tender age with all the requisites of a responsible citizen of tomorrow. Children at San Academy were edified about various issues like environment protection, reduction of global warming, improving green cover, improving ground water quality, general health and hygiene.
Children were inculcated about the need of the hour initiatives that lay in front of them. Awareness building teams from WOW enlightened young minds and piloted them in realising their social responsibilities. They were asked to donate old newspapers towards this project and in return they had a happy barter of fancy stationary that, without doubt spiked their happiness quotient. Attractive notebooks, pencils, sketches, erasers, geometry boxes, etc.…saw their way in to the households of many enthusiastic kids the last two days.
It was no doubt an occasion that left the school and its team spellbound on the overwhelming response initiated by the children. Every child zealously brought in bunches of papers on the said dates and showed immense enthusiasm and zeal that spoke volumes about their interest to be a part of the campaign. Around 150 kids of our school generously donated 3 tonnes of paper to the WOW project much to the awe and incredulity of the WOW team present in-house.
The school no doubt is basking on the contentment that …yes! indeed! the sparks are seen….we are to witness a light that is to grow further and further and light up the world of tomorrow with the utmost radiance of love and humanity in the years to come.
